A Closer Look at the Life & Downfall of “Willie Boy” Johnson

April 25th, 2017 CEO

wbjBy Marla Eggar

Anyone whose heard of my second favorite gangster of all time, John Gotti, surely at some point has heard of Wilfred Johnson aka “Willie Boy” Johnson. He was born in Canarsie, Brooklyn, one of five children. His father was a Native American and his mother was Italian-American.

His family settled in Red Hook, Brooklyn where Wilfred Johnson was raised with his brothers and sisters. He was known on the streets as “Indian” or “half breed” in reference to his mixed Italian-Lenape heritage.

His father, John Johnson, was an abusive alcoholic who frequently beat his wife and children. Johnson’s father often spent his entire paycheck on alcohol. In addition, Johnson’s mother would periodically desert her husband and children but would always come back. Talk about dysfunctional!

Two Retro Games Making a Comeback

April 25th, 2017 CEO

bacHumans have always played games. The much-loved games we played in antiquity have followed us down the ages, with relatively few changes along the way – at least until we entered the digital age and the internet came along. Here we take a closer look at baccarat and chess, two very different retro games that are garnering the support of a whole new audience, thanks to the inventive use of some very modern technologies.

The Franco-Italian War, in common with most struggles of the period, didn’t bring much to alleviate the travails of the human condition, but one positive thing it did lead to was the introduction of a new card game to the fashionable parlors of continental Europe. Weary French soldiers who had served Charles VIII in the expansionist conflict of the late 15th century brought back with them a new game, acquired in Italy and made popular in the barracks and bivouacs of the fighting forces of both sides.

Definition of a Gangster: Cesare Borgia

April 24th, 2017 CEO

cbBy Marla Eggar

Contrary to popular belief my favorite gangster of all time isn’t John Gotti. It’s true, I admire him for his principal’s, demeanor and charismatic charm. However, the man I marvel at isn’t even considered a gangster at all!! Yeah you heard me!! It wasn’t a typo. Even though he isn’t a gangster his character embodies the very definition. Wait for it – Cesare Borgia!! I know some of you are scratching your heads. Who?? For those of you know who have no clue who he is. Let me make the introduction.

Cesare was the illegitimate son of Rodrigo Borgia’s and his lady love Vannozza dei Cattanei. This was during the Renaissance era. His estimated birth is sometime around 1475. Cesare was of Spanish-Italian heritage and was geared from birth to become a cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church but this was not his desire it was his father’s.

Pearce’s Picks: Dean Martin – “Forever Cool”

April 19th, 2017 CEO

41epjkfimblBy Jerry Pearce

It was the year 2007, and my local sanctuary, Borders Books, was closing forever. Not only was the store closing, the entire adjoining mall was being torn down, and accordingly, the superstore was holding the precedent of an out of business sale. Walking through the gap-a-plenty music section, which looked much like a bomb hit it, I found myself, predictably, in front of the section with the “jazz/standards” heading, which was mainly untouched. With signs emblazoned on the walls and pillars around me with phrases like “75% off!” and “all stock must sell,” I felt much like a kid in a candy store with a pocket full of quarters.

Thumbing down the shelf through the many titles, I came upon a Dean Martin record of which I had never seen before entitled “Forever Cool”. A neat black and white picture of Dean clad in a v-neck sweater with open collar adorned the cover, set in some sharp dark cube art. Thinking the album to be the typical compilation, I flipped over the title and became quite surprised, seeing that each of the more then dozen odd titles each featuring a duet partner with the likes of Kevin Spacey, Joss Stone, Robbie Williams, as well as instrumentalists Chris Botti and Dave Koz. I knew this had to be some sort of special release considering Dean Martin had quit recording in studio long before some of these celebrities had established careers. For the bargain price of seven bucks, I drove home with the disc.

The Celebrity Hype of Donnie Brasco: Is Joe Pistone a Hero or a Royal Embellishing Pain In The Ass?

April 15th, 2017 CEO

joepistonespeaksBy Marla Eggar

Joseph Dominick Pistone better known as “Donnie Brasco” has made a name and reputation for himself by laying the groundwork to successfully infiltrate the American mob. His undercover experience has been detailed in his book Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia which went on to become the basis for the 1997 film Donnie Brasco where Pistone functioned as a consultant to add authenticity. In addition, to the book, there was a (short lived) TV series Falcone, starring Jason Gedrick as Pistone and his life was used in an episode of FBI: The Untold Stories. (On a side note Jason Gedrick also played Cross De Lena in The Last Don, not Pistone relevant I just think he’s really hot and worth the mention).

Theresa Ferrara: Murdered by the Mob!

April 10th, 2017 CEO

220px-theresa_ferrara_2013-08-24_11-42By Marla Eggar

The perception of beauty is subjective but anyone who tries to tell you that Theresa Ferrara wasn’t beautiful was either death, dumb or blind. Theresa was a New York Italian, born in South Ozone Park, Queens and an aspiring model and actress. However, I guess you could say her side gig was working with the Lucchese crime family selling small quantities of coca (cocaine) and ludes (quaaludes) to mobsters in the Lucchese family including Tommy DeSimone.

She eventually opened a beauty salon (allegedly mob-funded ) in Long Island which also served as a front to sell drugs. Now before you start thinking that Theresa was a “good girl gone bad” think again. She was no stranger to the mob life. Truth be told, she was related to Carlos Marcello, the mob boss in New Orleans, so I guess you can say she was born with a “boss” mentality but she did make some crucial mistakes along the way.

A Closer Look at Joseph Charlies Massino

April 8th, 2017 CEO

431px-joeymassinocropBy Marla Eggar

The first time I heard of Joseph Charles Massino I couldn’t help but to like him. However, in time, that changed! He came from good stock, provided for his family and was a devoted husband and father. In his youth, Massino was considered a renegade yet a good athlete. At the age of 16, Massino dropped out of high school. While his distaste for traditional education was apparent, Massino’s ambition was also abundantly clear. It was because of his ambition and work ethic that he met Carmine Rastelli, younger brother of Phillip Rastelli, a Capo in the Bonanno crime family. Phillip took a liking to Massino and he became his protégé.

Massino flourished under his apprenticeship to Phillip and soon became known as a “proven earner”. In time, Massino expanded his criminal activities beyond loan sharking and numbers and took up truck hijacking where he crossed paths with future Gambino boss John Gotti (who according to Massino, later took part in the Borelli murder.) A hit ordered by Paul Castellano for remarks made about his appearance. Nevertheless, Massino secured his own future on June 14, 1977 when he was inducted into the Bonanno crime family after a decade of service.

Legendary Comedian Don Rickles the Frank Sinatra of Comedy is DEAD at 90 – Cause of Death Revealed

April 6th, 2017 CEO

dr-fsBy “Bad” Brad Berkwitt

This one resonates hard with me NewzBreaker readers. Legendary comedian Don Rickles died from kidney failure today at the age of 90. For years, Rickles was one of the biggest comedians in the world where he did his insult comedy for sold out crowds around the world. He was Frank Sinatra’s favorite comedian and only Rickles, could ever get away with the stuff he pulled on Sinatra from the insults, to the kissing him on the lips back in 76, on The Johnny Carson Show.

I had the honor to see Don in Atlantic City back in 99 and to this day, the personally autographed picture he signed to me hangs proudly on my office Hall of Fame Wall.

The Sinatra File: The Anomaly of “Moonlight”

April 3rd, 2017 CEO

articlesharedimage-23442By Jerry Pearce

“That’s the flattest note anybody ever hit!”– Sinatra, recording “Oh, You Crazy Moon”

Let’s make a long story short: “Moonlight Sinatra” is a rarity of a Sinatra album, just not for the reasons that you might think. It’s not that type of album that will fetch top dollar on an online auction site. In fact, it’s barely been out of print since its release in the summer of 1966, still available to this day on both compact disc and digital download. It’s rare for the facts the surround it, and for Frank Sinatra, who in the midst of the 1960s was experimenting the most with new arrangers and sounds at his label, Reprise, “Moonlight” was a throwback to the albums that preceded him during his time at Capitol Records in the 1950s, a returned to a time honored “concept” that he himself invented.

The Story of Parnell “Stacks” Edwards Part of the Lufthansa Heist & Immortalized In The Blockbuster Movie Goodfellas

April 1st, 2017 CEO

peBy Marla Eggar

Anyone familiar with the movie Goodfellas has heard of Parnell Edwards, also known as “Stacks”. In Goodfellas, his character was played by Samuel L. Jackson and was described as someone who hung around the club playing music. What the movie over looked was despite the fact that “Stacks” was a struggling musician and songwriter he was also a onetime bodyguard to Muhammad Ali and close friend to Tommy DeSimone. Despite the movies depiction that “Stacks” only assisted in the Lufthansa Heist the reality is “Stacks” was considered an associate of the Vario Crew and worked not only with DeSimone, but Henry Hill as well. The Vario Crew was a group that operated under Paul Vario, a made man and capo, in the Lucchese family.

The New Trailer For Stephen King’s ‘IT’ Officially Released

March 29th, 2017 CEO

itBy Kristi O’Toole

Being a writer of the supernatural one may think I’m not too fazed by horror, but this new trailer release should be titled, ‘S*it’, because that’s what I did in my pants. The blood-thirsty child-hungry Pennywise is back with a vengeance.

‘IT’ is easily one of Stephen King’s most well known creations, appealing to young and old alike. In 1990 Tim Curry brought the evil sewer dweller to life in a big way during the television mini-series. Now, Bill Skarsgard is having a go at it, and from the looks of that trailer…he is not going to disappoint.

Cougar Night & Lots More! This Column is Rated R…

March 29th, 2017 CEO

4th-pinupBy Marla Eggar

This week I’m taking an intermission break from the mob and introducing … My girls! These chicks have been down with me since day one. Periodically we try to get together for a date night that we call “Cougar Night”. This week we decided to put together a list of public service announcement for shits and giggles. Now before I go any further let me explain. Cougar night is a night when us girls get together and ponder life’s great mysteries over several bottles of Merlot or Cabernet. It’s called “Cougar Night” because we have collectively decided that we’re a lot closer to 40 than 21 and these young guys nowadays are way hotter than ever! All my chicks that participate in “Cougar night”, come in all different flavors: two black chicks, one Italian, one Irish, one Indian and one chick whose mama enjoyed the 70s so much that we’re not sure what she is. Cooking, family and sex are our main priorities but the one thing we all have in common is” jungle fever”.
