Have you ever noticed that the biggest racists and bigots in America are those with the least exposure to the group they’re maligning? As it turns out, most people who openly slander those in historically marginalized groups, do not have a single close friend who fits the category they so recklessly defame. Is this a coincidence?

I assure you it is not.

Because transgender Americans do not meet cultural expectations for gender identity, they are more likely than others to die prematurely of unnatural causes. The fact is, people who are born transgender are more likely to be murdered and more likely to attempt suicide than almost any other historically oppressed group in the nation.

I’m an equal opportunity dater. I date all races, I don’t discriminate. Why not cast a wider net when there are so many fish in the sea. I won’t deny that dating interracial can be full of awkward social moments, but I’m not afraid of a challenge. I think dating interracially has allowed me to learn a lot about cultures that I would have never heard of and has given me an appreciation of my own culture as well. It’s also allowed me to see that we may have differences but we are all similar.

I’m so nervous when I meet someone’s family. I always wonder if they’ve given the folks a heads up, “Hey Mom and Dad, I’m dating a black girl!” I can’t tell you how many surprised parents I’ve met and on the receiving end of the ole “Oh, you’re not what I expected” conversation. Surprise, your son has jungle fever and you know what they say about what happens once you go black? Forget it, he’s ruined and expect to have a passel of little crinkly haired grandbabies in the near future. So let’s talk about the crinkly haired babies for a minute.

Stereotype: Widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. As different as we all are, our stereotypes are wildly amusing. Rest is uneasy that we can’t go out the door or pick up a phone without being hit with them and we definitely can’t be the driver!

Arita:

So many stereotypes and not enough time. Firstly upon meeting me, I typically blow people away with my impeccable English. I’ve been complimented for not having an accent. What does an Arlington, VA native sound like? Sometimes I do say Ya’ll. Secondly, stereotypes suggest I can’t drive. I’ve have not yet hit anyone or anything and it’s been almost 20 years behind the wheel. My insurance company actually prefers me now. They sent a preferred customer card and everything. Stay alive. Don’t text and drive.

I grew up the daughter of 2 amazing teachers. One of the teachers, my dad, was also a High School Football Coach for my entire life until he retired. So, not only did I grow up with underpaid and underappreciated teachers…I was also the child of an underpaid and many times unappreciated coach. Not only did my dad coach football, he also coached basketball in the winter and then either track, golf, or baseball in the spring to supplement our family income.

As a child I grew up on the football field, basketball court, etc. so I could hang out with my dad. It didn’t matter that I was a girl because I was a total tomboy! During those days as a child I never sat in the stands long enough to hear anyone talk bad about my dad or the other coaches who were also my dad’s. You see the football coaching staff my dad was a part of, was together for a good 30 years so our families were very tight knit and actually still are. During my junior high and high school years I was too busy socializing or being on the field as a football manager to hear those words of disgust towards the coaches or players.

During the debate at The Mob Museum, Moldea argued that notorious labor leader Jimmy Hoffa and two Southern organized-crime bosses, Carlos Marcello of New Orleans and Santo Trafficante of Tampa, engineered the Nov. 22, 1963, killing of the president in Dallas.

Remember when we were young and in such a rush to grow up? I don’t even know why. All I wanted to do was stay up late at night, not have anyone tell me what to do and buy the whole candy aisle at 7-Eleven. This whole adulting thing doesn’t really seem like a fair trade off. Except for the candy.

Being a kid was carefree. Being a teen was just so annoying for everyone involved and now being an adult, I’m learning that every adult before me was just winging it. There are certain things we can never prepare for. Such as, our parents getting older or sick. If you have lost a parent, I’m sorry for your heartache. You are stronger than you and I know.

I don’t know about you, but Halloween is one my favorite holidays… It’s the one holiday where parents can not only take part and dress up, but if they’re really lucky, their kids are still young enough to sneak a few treats from that candy sack… to help lighten the load, of course.

This year, Halloween has really snuck up on me… I’m not sure if it’s the erratic weather where summer was kind of fall and fall has been unseasonably warm. Maybe it’s the hellish, divisive drama that has been non-stop since the Trump regime took possession of the White House. But at least there’s Halloween, where EVERY American can forget about the hate, fear, bigotry, and racism and just get out there and have some fun, eat tons of candy, and escape the real world for one night…

Whomever said “Kids are like tiny drunk people” didn’t lie. My child and I spend a lot of time together and as I look back on our daily interactions, I think I need to check her juice box. She’s has no filter, zero balance, an emotional rollercoaster, slow as a sloth (her words) and she still wears all her meals. That’s basically every experience with a drunk person I’ve had all wrapped into one cute little package.

Parents already know this but kids will tell all your business! You can threaten them with death and they will still spell their guts. “Child, if you tell anyone, I will kill you!” They will nod their little heads and then turn around and literally tell anyone. Exhibit A, my daughter’s friend, told me as soon as she saw me that her mom lost her job yesterday. She then whispers to me that her mom told her not to tell anyone. What the hell kid, you couldn’t even wait 24 hours! My daughter likes to tell everyone my bowel movement schedule. She told all my neighbors at the same time, I was running inside to go poop. She said I poop every day at the same time, I was so mad at her but I had to laugh it off instead of looking like a crazy person in front of the neighborhood.

Here in Tampa a serial killer is putting lives in danger and arguably the most fun day of the year in serious jeopardy! We have 5 days until Halloween and as of October 9th this city has been thrown into a frantic search for a killer.

As of today…he’s still out there.

The official definition of serial killer is someone who kills 3 or more people in about a month. In the area of Seminole Heights, in Tampa, 3 people were killed in just 10 days. The only leads they have are a few surveillance videos of a person walking and then running from the area the first victim was shot. He could be the killer or at very least a person of interest but no one has identified the person in the video yet.

No one should ever have to live in fear for their life or their sanity. Too many times people think of domestic violence as just physical abuse and are oblivious to other forms. Among others there is also Verbal, Emotional, Financial, Sexual, Psychological and Neglect…it’s all abuse and it often goes hand in hand, or it’s just a matter of time until any of these turns into physical abuse.

These other forms often go undetected because many of us are not even aware of the signs of abuse. Unfortunately, in our society we easily brush it off as entertainment and even frequently mistake it for beautiful passionate love, only to be surprised when the ugly truth rears its head. I will use my experience as example for you or for someone else. No one intentionally enters an abusive relationship but facts are if you have been in one but don’t recognize the signs, even if you get out, you are likely to get into another abusive relationship and often with the same person.

It takes 5-7 violent and abusive acts for a person to leave their abuser but it is possible to avoid these toxic situations all together. These are the signs of a potentially abusive relationship you should look for:

Antoine “Fats” Domino, one of the architects of early rock ‘n’ roll whose piano-based hits such as “Blueberry Hill”, “Blue Monday” and “Ain’t That a Shame,” died Tuesday, an official said.
Domino passed away due to natural causes, according to Mark Bone, chief investigator with the Jefferson Parish Medical Examiner’s office in Louisiana. He was 89.

Emmy Award-winning actor Robert Guillaume, best known as the title character in the TV sitcom “Benson,” died Tuesday. He was 89.

His wife Donna Brown Guillaume told the Associated Press he died at their Los Angeles home of complications of prostate cancer. Guillaume was a beloved TV star in the middle to late 70’s through the middle 80’s and always turned in great performances. He won Emmys both for “Soap” (as supporting actor) and “Benson” (as lead actor).

Bring out the decorations your tricks and treats, it’s time for Halloween! I love Halloween and not because I’m a Pagan or candy junkie, I just love to dress up. Yes, I have flare for the dramatics! If I could go to a costume party a few times a year, I would be content. Besides costumes, I don’t care about anything else Halloween. I’m not buying no decorations, who has space to store all that? Pumpkin carving, I’m not doing it! Now you got a funky pumpkin rotting on your front porch.

Before I had my daughter, I would give out candy to the Trick or Treaters. I ain’t giving out no candy, to a big ass kid with no costume. I need to see some creativity before I give you this expensive ass candy. Halloween candy is expensive and now I see some people upping the Trick or Treating game. Last year the houses in my neighborhood where giving away brownies, cookies, glasses of wine and beer to the parents. We got chocolate wasted kids and drunk moms running the streets at night, bound to be some drama. Last year this one house gave out fortune cookies! Now you know they took those stale cookies from work. I threw them cookies in the trash, when London wasn’t looking.

Our Disney World Family Vacation

One of the reasons I love living in Tampa, FL is that I’m in the middle of everything! Anything fun we want to enjoy is just a hop (1 hour or less) a skip (3 hours) or jump (5 or more) away. The discounts as a resident of the Sunshine state aren’t too bad either. This time my family and I went just a hop away to Orlando to enjoy the most popular tourist spot, Walt Disney World!

This trip included all my immediate family which has grown to a decent size, 11 to be exact and we went to enjoy Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party in The Magic Kingdom. The last time we got together we enjoyed Myrtle Beach and we thought planning that was stressful but this trip truly tried our patience! What they don’t tell you about the most magical place on earth is there is some serious behind the scenes work to be done first, especially with a big group. They are pretty good about walking you through step by step, but by the time I knew what was going on and got everything done, I didn’t want to hear the word Disney even uttered accidentally! So, if you have a big family, appoint a coordinator and be prepared to be prepared. I was the coordinator this trip and patience is truly a virtue.
