Cormac McCarthy’s New Novel “The Passenger” Gets Sneak Preview at Public Reading

August 19th, 2015 CEO

McCarthyBy Chris Benedict

Although the eminently reclusive author did not participate in the staged reading of excerpts from The Passenger, what will be his first novel in ten years, Cormac McCarthy did appear onstage at the conclusion of the event to thank the audience assembled at Santa Fe, New Mexico’s Lannan Foundation. Actress Caitlin McShea and evolutionary biologist David Krakauer performed passages of the book rumored to be thirty years in the making. The Passenger will reportedly be published at a still unspecified time in 2016, which will also mark the 50th anniversary of McCarthy’s literary debut The Orchard Keeper, and evidently involve a heavily scientific plotline.

“You are what you eat”. This manner of thinking is widely accepted in today’s society. People know that a healthy diet and lifestyle typically yields a healthy life. Conversely, a diet riddled in high fat and sugars, fast foods, and empty calories typically results in health problems, such as diabetes, obesity, and generally poor health.

We accept this fact regarding the things that we put into our bodies, but do we accept this in what we put into our minds? This week, a movie entitled “Straight Outta Compton” topped the box office with a $56.1 million opening. Social media has been buzzing about the movie, and demographics show that the majority of movie goers were under age 30….. and the majority were female. That fact is troubling to me. Why? For more reasons than a few.

10 Day to Day Hassles That Really Make My Blood Boil but Shouldn’t

August 17th, 2015 CEO

Man on SBBy Dave Siderski

A number of years ago a man by the name of Richard Carlson Ph.D. wrote a popular book called: “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff”. Great concept! Ultimately, there are very few things in life that are truly worth getting upset about when you stop and think about it. However, if you’re like me, you’ll appreciate that sometimes this is much easier said than done. That said, here are 10 day to day irritations that send me completely off the rails. I’ve edited out most of the salty language so that I don’t get in trouble with “Bad” Brad my Publisher. (lol)

Movie still of Kid Monk Baroni – Photo shows Leonard Nimoy, right, in boxing attire with Jack Larson at left.

By Chris Benedict

When I was maybe five or six, Mom drove me to a department store 45 minutes away so that I could meet Leonard Nimoy. Mego was releasing its new line of Star Trek action figures and playsets and Spock himself was putting in a personal appearance at Two Guys (think the 1970s predecessor to Target) to promote them. Mom had a keen eye for advertisements of such events and made sure that I wouldn’t miss it. That’s just the way she was.

Murphy’s Top 10 80’s Hard Rock/Metal Songs

August 14th, 2015 CEO

HMBy Ian Murphy (Who else would it be by?)

I am known in certain circles for having pretty varied tastes in music. This is absolutely true, but I must admit, I always seem to go back to the heavy stuff. I was in a metal band in college and I can’t stay away from it for too long. For every article I write about the songwriting merits of George Harrison or the Velveeta-rich croon of Winglebert Bembledack, the magnetic pull of metal always lurks in the shadows. The energy, power and sheer brutality just calls to me like Walter Hudson (RIP fatman) to a garbage bag full of popcorn, and later stuck in the figurative doorway of musical obsession.

Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer: A Tear Stained Letter and Grease Stained Pizza Box

August 12th, 2015 CEO

JC JSBy Chris Benedict

Although the version featuring them both on vocals wouldn’t officially surface until the posthumous Unearthed collection, Bob Marley’s Redemption Song proves to be a fitting dual farewell from Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash. Well understandable is the global significance placed upon a self-empowering protest anthem written and made famous by a Jamaican Rastafarian who beheld Ethiopian Emperor Halie Selassie as a sort of Christ figure, performed by the quintessential country music outlaw whose poignantly incendiary murder ballads about “mud and blood and beer” torched the falsely sentimental imagery and mythology of the folkloric American west, along with a Turkish-born punk rocker whose musical influences ranged from Woody Guthrie to Lee “Scratch” Perry and fronted arguably the most persuasive British agitators of the Reagan/Thatcher era.

OB vs DTBy Dave Siderski

This fight is scheduled for six rounds by “Mythical Boxing” rules which I’m completely making up as we go along. It will consist of three rounds in the boxing ring along with three at the debate table between our two contenders. Our Mythical Boxing expert panel has made President Obama a slight favorite based on his relative youth and articulate oratory. However, “The Donald” still has a punchers chance based on his ruthlessness, business acumen, and distracting hair style.

Dave’s Five Worst Character Kill Offs in Television and Film History

August 11th, 2015 CEO

JEBy Dave Siderski

Killing off a character in popular movie series or television can be a risky proposition. Some have been done brilliantly such as execution of the Tony Montana character and Tony Soprano’s long awaited murder of Ralphie Cifareto in the Soprano’s. Other have been completely ill conceived and in some cases, did irreparable harm to the brand. With this in mind, here are my five worst character kill offs in film and television history.
