“I detest bad manners. If people are polite, I am. They shouldn’t try to get away with not being polite to me.”— Francis Albert Sinatra
May 14th, 2015, marked the 17th anniversary of the passing of Music Icon Francis Albert Sinatra at the age of 82. As an avid fan who grew up to the sounds and stories of Sinatra from my late Father, Alvin Berkwitt, who collected his albums, worked rooms that he played at the Fountainbleau Hotel on Miami Beach, and watched all of his movies, I didn’t learn to really appreciate what Frank did for the world. It would hit me on my 22nd year on Planet Earth back in 1990, while stationed in Italy, and it hit me like a ton of bricks.
As a music fan, I always like to listen to those rare treasures from yesteryear. Since music is universal, I thought the NewzBreaker readers would enjoy a column that would find those gems that maybe have not been heard since they first came out or in several years. Since my musical taste goes back to the 1940’s, you will never know what you may get in this column, but we will bring you a video with a few tidbits about the artist or group.
Our first artist is Keith out of Philadelphia, PA singing his 1967 hit, 98.6 which was on an album called AIN’T GONNA LIE. Great vocal and background band which gave listeners a catchy tune. As my Uncle Stan always says, “A good song, is a good song, PERIOD!
I chose to use a video of Keith doing it live from 2008 because he was still in great voice and also appeared with the Tokens.
Here we have a number song that was a massive hit in 1966 by ? & The Mysterians named 96 TEARS. The group was a garage band out of Bay City, Michigan who was led by ? (Rudy Martinez) who wore tight pants and was never seen without his sunglasses whether it was day or night. In 1966, it hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and on the RPM 100 in Canada and is ranked #210 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
In 1984, MTV was number one and the synthesizer sound owned the airwaves. A group out of Melbourne, Australia, named “Real Life” had a smash hit with “SEND ME AN ANGEL” and followed up with another hit “CATCH ME I’M FALLING” from the album “HEARTLAND.” The video by today’s standards is quirky, but for the 80’s era it fit in perfectly.

Knatalye Hope and Adeline Faith Mata share a special bond that most twins, let alone regular siblings, will never know. Born on April 11, 2014 at Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women in Houston, the conjoined twins spent the first 10-months of their lives fused together from the ribcage down to the pelvis, sharing several internal organs. Facing a lifetime of challenges, their parents Elysse and Eric Mata made the incredibly difficult decision to have the girls undergo life-altering separation surgery. Lincoln Square Productions, an ABC News Production Company, followed the conjoined twins’ extensive journey from birth through separation, and secured the first interview with the entire family after both girls were released from the hospital in the documentary CONJOINED TWINS: MIRACLE SEPARATION, which will debut on the Discovery Life Channel on Thursday, July 16 at 9/8c.

1981….I was 13 years old and my late father, Alvin, and I were in a record store in North Miami Beach Florida called Coconuts. Dad, was an avid record collector for many years, so I would usually accompany him as we sifted through bins looking for those rare gems and especially what they used to call, cut out records. On this particular day out, I was sifting through the bins and came across an album with a cool cover of a guy who was a massive star in the 70’s, but at this point in the early 80’s his fame started to wane. This gentleman was none other than, singer/songwriter, Paul Williams. Yes, the one many know from Smokey and The Bandit or his many appearances on The Merv Griffin Show and Johnny Carson Show to name just a few he was a staple on in the 70’s.

In the summer of 1968, popular music was in the midst of an enormous growth period where seemingly every day some artist or another broke new ground. Within this sonic evolution, there was an undercurrent of (often in the Blues tradition) “ax-manship”, or a competition between top guitarists to push the boundaries of their instrument to new heights. Over in England, players like Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck were constantly pushing the envelope in both technical proficiency and creative expression. However, it was an American who was really putting the musical world on its ear: Jimi Hendrix. Perhaps no guitar player in pop-history had a more seemingly “came out of nowhere” impact than the strange and mysterious Hendrix, whose vision and influence is on par with luminaries such as Brian Wilson, Lennon and McCartney, and Stevie Wonder. Select company indeed.
Discovery Family has acquired the US rights to the 26-episode series, DREAM DEFENDERS, from Tiny Island Productions. The series follows 14-year-old twins Zoey and Zane Mercer through their dual dimension adventures—in both the ‘Realworld’ of Meridian, and the fantastical universes of the ‘Dreamworld’. A premiere date for the series will be announced at a later date.
“Discovery Family is committed to building the very best destination for family television,” said Tom Cosgrove, general manager, Discovery Family Channel. “We are excited to bring this high quality CGI series from Tiny Island to the network’s robust daytime lineup.”

When you look at what constitutes a truly great pop song, you need to ask yourself: what are the criteria? For me, it has much less to do with historical significance or chart position but has more to do with the caliber of composition and what is actually going on in the song itself. The level of musicianship doesn’t necessarily have to be elite, but competence, flow, and performance are key. A classic example of a nearly flawless pop song is Heart’s “Straight On”, originally off of their killer 1978 album Dog and Butterfly. The version I personally prefer is the live rendition off of 1995’s acoustic album The Road Home, and this is the version that we will examine below.
American Ultra is a fast-paced action comedy about Mike (Eisenberg), a seemingly hapless and unmotivated stoner whose small-town life with his live-in girlfriend, Phoebe (Stewart), is suddenly turned upside down. Unbeknownst to him, Mike is actually a highly trained, lethal sleeper agent. In the blink of an eye, as his secret past comes back to haunt him, Mike is thrust into the middle of a deadly government operation and is forced to summon his inner action-hero in order to survive.
