The Good, The Bad and The Crazy (No One’s EVER Called Me Boring) – BOOK REVIEW

February 26th, 2012 Geno

By Geno McGahee

Mary Ann Duke, M.D., is the spunky author behind the book “THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE CRAZY (No One’s Every Called Me Boring).” She can add me to the group that finds her incredibly compelling.

I have had a bad run lately in books and films, but my streak of mediocrities has ended with this pleasant surprise. The first thing that I really enjoyed was the fact that Duke pulls no punches. A successful eye surgeon turned inmate with a mountain of debt, Duke presents an honest picture…and an amusing one.

The spirit of the author is a big part of this book’s appeal. You really get to know her and you can’t help to be amused. She covers the “boy’s club” in the medical industry, failed relationships, and hitting rock bottom. Her rock bottom involved several DUIs, leading to some collisions and time behind bars.

The storytelling in this book is outstanding. I had seen several comments about this book, stating that they could not put it down, and they were not lying. I finished this book in two days, and it was quite impressive from start to finish. Her experiences in the court system and then in jail was very interesting. When an alleged murderer is brought in, it gets really interesting.

Dr. Duke’s description of the characters is unusual at times, but so effective. She relates most of the characters to something familiar like the Amish or the Wizard from THE WIZARD OF OZ. It was very amusing. I found myself laughing quite a bit. She did paint a nice picture of Venice, the alleged killer. I still can’t get her ugly mug out of my head!

Although this book is a book of girl power and the push against the male dominated world and laws that tend to favor the man, as a male, I was rallying on her side. She dealt with a lot of nonsense, fell down several times, and rebounded, which is what we love to see. We all love the comeback story and this is just that.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE CRAZY (No One’s Ever Called Me Boring) is a winner. Dr. Duke is a character and paints a vivid picture. It’s very easy to get tied up into the story and lose track of time…it’s that good. So many authors and filmmakers will have a lot of positive reviews from family, friends, and those associated with the project, and when you review it, you wonder what they were watching/reading. For this book you can believe the hype. Dr. Duke has lived an eventful life and presents it well.
